On 10.06.2015 I had the opportunity to train with Royce Gracie. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Royce is known as the master of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Some would even consider him to be the most influential figure in the history of MMA.
As a Krav Maga practitioner, I didn’t know what to expect from this workshop but was eager to learn from other martial arts to expand my horizons and develop my self-defence and fighting skills. From a self-defence point of view, the last place you want to end up is ground. Learning new techniques from Royce helped put a lot of scenarios into context.
The day began with a wrestling exercise as warm up before moving to takedowns. From there, we learnt how to move effectively on the ground and to finish the fight by using the triangle choke, the kimura shoulder lock and the omoplata.
Every technique was perfectly explained. Royce moved us from one exercise to another with exceptional fluidity and before I knew it, 3 hours had flown by and it was our summarising drill already when we exercised all learned variations.
Royce Gracie is an exceptional instructor. It was a great honour to learn from him so that I can be a more proficient on the ground and impart my knowledge to my students. I can’t wait to put these skills into practice with the principles of Krav Maga.
All in all, it was a fantastic event from KMG UK. I look forward to next one.
